Fields of Cooperation

The first diplomatic representation in Sweden was established in 1918 with Ambassador Mr. Michael (Mikhako) Tsereteli. The Georgian Embassy was reopened in Sweden in November 2006.

Swedish-Georgian relations have much deeper roots going back to the second half of the 19th century, which is associated with the family of Nobels who invested into construction of oil installations in Batumi port, transport networks in Georgia and assisted in opening of the Swedish vice-consulate in Batumi in 1887.

Sweden became a member of the New Group of Friends of Georgia at the ministerial meeting in 2007 in Vilnius.

Development Cooperation Assistance rendered by the Swedish Government through the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) is becoming increasingly important. Sweden is the largest EU Member donor country for Georgia.

Sweden continues its assistance in the ENP Action Plan implementation in various fields: good governance, democratic and judiciary reforms, human rights, economic development, conflict resolution.

With a view of boosting of bilateral interparliamentary cooperation the all party group on Sweden was established in the Georgian Parliament led by Ms. Rusudan Kervalishvili and in Swedish Parliament was set up the all party group on Georgia led by Ms. Jessica Polfjä rd.

In 2009 Sweden increased its assistance for active involvement of Georgia into Eastern Partnership Initiative.

During the Swedish EU Presidency (1 July 2009- 31 December 2009) Sweden continued its support to Georgia on the following issues: EU-Georgia agreement on Visa Facilitation, Association Agreement with Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade component, Russia's fulfillment of 12 August 2008 cease fire agreement and the EU monitoring mission in Georgia.

Government of Sweden on 21 January 2010 adopted a new strategy for Development Cooperation with Georgia for the period 2010-2013. It is intended to increase Swedish development cooperation with Georgia to approximately SEK 100 million per year.

Georgian red dry wine "Saperavi" is sold in the Swedish Alcohol Retail Monopoly - "Systembolaget" since 2007.

On 31 March, 1 April 2009 Swedish Business Delegation, headed by the State Secretary for Trade, Mr. Gunnar Wieslander visited Georgia. The first Swedish-Georgian Business Forum was held in the frames of the visit. The follow up of the Business forum along with the Seminar "Export to Sweden" are planned for spring 2010.
