Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and Finland

On 11 October 2007, in Helsinki, in the framework of the visit of the President of Georgia to the Republic of Finland, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Gela Bezhuashvili met with his Finnish counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilkka Kanerva.

The sides discussed a wide spectrum of relations between Georgia and Finland with focus on the necessity of deepening economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Ministers reviewed the issues of energy security. The focus of the meeting was also the Georgian Government’s Peace Plans for resolution of the conflicts. Mr. Bezhuashvili briefed his Finnish counterpart on the ongoing reforms and democratic processes taking place in Georgia.

The issues pertaining to the implementation of the European Neighborhood Policy Action Plan (ENP AP) were discussed at the meeting. The talking points included, inter alia, prospects for EU-Georgia cooperation towards peaceful resolution of the conflicts, border management and visa issues, trade and regional cooperation.

The sides made a detailed survey of the action plans of Finland as next holder of OSCE chairmanship. Mr. Illka Kanerva pledged to pay a visit to Georgia in capacity of the Foreign Minister of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office in February, 2008.

The same day the Foreign Ministers of Georgia and the Republic of Finland signed the Agreement between the Government of Georgia and the Government of the Republic of Finland for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income.
