With a view of defusing the tension and building a sustainable liberal democracy, President of Georgia Mr. Mikheil Saakashvili has decided to call swift presidential elections on 5 January 2008. On the same day the President suggested holding plebiscite on the date of next parliamentary elections.

Speaker of the Parliament Mrs. Nino Burjanadze is actively involved in a dialogue with the united opposition, initiated by the patriarch of all Georgia His Holiness Ilia II, seeking a compromise over the issues of mutual concern.

Due to the quick stabilization of the situation in Tbilisi the President took decision to lift the state of emergency on 16 November, earlier than 15 day period as it was initially approved by the Parliament of Georgia. At this point, all law enforcement special units have returned to their regular duties. The life in the capital of Georgia is back to normal.

The Government of Georgia is strongly committed to the democratic principles and values.
