The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia visits Sweden

On 28 May 2008, in Stockholm, in the framework of the two-day visit to the Kingdom of Sweden, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Eka Tkeshelashvili met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden Mr. Carl Bildt, Minister for EU Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden Ms. Cecilia Malmström and Minister for International Development Cooperation Ms. Gunilla Carlsson.

The meeting between the foreign ministers focused mainly on bilateral and Georgia-EU relations. The Ministers discussed the ongoing processes in Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali Region and the peace initiatives of the President of Georgia. The Ministers also paid the attention to the results of the parliamentary elections held in Georgia on 21 May. The two sides exchanged their views on the UNOMIG Report of 26 May 2008 and Russia’s military engagement in Abkhazia, Georgia.

The meeting with Minister of EU Affairs of Sweden focused on Georgia-EU relations and Polish-Swedish Eastern Partnership initiative that is being discussed by the EU. The Swedish side reaffirmed its support for Georgia’s integration with the European structures and proposed to share its experience in a number of spheres.

The main theme of the meeting with the Minister of International Development Cooperation of Sweden was enhancement of development cooperation between Georgia and Sweden and the progress in the implementation of the projects financed by the Swedish International Development Agency in Georgia. Support of the Government of Sweden to Georgia’s closer partnership with EU was emphasized as well. Mrs. Eka Tkeshelashvili invited Mrs. Gunilla Carlsson to visit Georgia in near future at her convenience, which was accepted with gratitude.
