Minister for International Development Cooperation of Sweden visits Georgia

On 26-27 January 2009, International Development Cooperation of Sweden Ms. Gunilla Carlsson paid her first working visit to Georgia. The purpose of the visit was to review the existing development cooperation between Sweden and Georgia as well as to prioritize Sweden’s 2010-2013 Country Strategy towards Georgia.

On 27 January, at the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Grigol Vashadze the sides focused on prospects for the development of cooperation between the two countries. The Georgian side briefed the International Development Cooperation Minister on the situation in Georgia’s conflict regions.

Mrs. Carlsson emphasized the necessity of finding ways for further strengthening the relations between Georgia and Sweden and reaffirmed Sweden’s support for Georgia’s integration into Europe and visa regime simplification. The Swedish Government will continue to support Georgia and will contribute 50 million euros towards the implementation of the reforms in the country.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Grigol Vashadze referred to Sweden as one of our most steadfast allies providing Georgia with substantial assistance in recovering the consequences of the war with Russia.

Other components of the programme included the meeting with Deputy Finance Minister Mr. Dimitri Gvindadze and Deputy State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration Ms. Tamar Beruchashvili. Ms. Carlsson also met the representatives of NGOs based in Georgia, the leaders of the opposition parties, donor organizations based in the country and visited the Shida Kartli Region, where she met with EUMM monitors from Sweden and IDPs who were forced to leave their homes after the Russian intrusion into Georgia.
