Establishment of the Association of Swedish Friends of Georgia

On the 28th of January 2009, at the Embassy of Georgia in Stockholm, on the initiative of the Embassy of Georgia and a group of Swedish friends, the Association of Swedish Friends of Georgia was inaugurated. At the meeting the statute of the Association was approved and a board of the organization was elected, namely: chairperson, deputy chairperson and five members of the governing board; the functions of each member of the board were defined as well. Ms. Anna Westerholm, deputy director of the multilateral development cooperation of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden was elected as a Chairperson of the Association and Mr. Eric Jönson, executive director of the Fulbright Commission in Sweden, former Swedish Honorable Consul in Georgia, as a Vice-chair.
The association is a non political, non profitable organization and serves the purpose of promoting knowledge about Georgia, its culture, language and history. The main aims of the Association of Swedish Friends of Georgia in Sweden are:

1. Support people to people contacts in Sweden and Georgia;
2. Pay attention to areas such as art, culture, education, science and sport.
3. Strengthening cooperation with similar associations in Sweden and abroad.
4. Promotion of knowledge about Sweden in Georgia;
5. Promotion of business activities among Swedish and Georgian entrepreneurs.   

The inaugural meeting was followed by the reception at the Georgian Embassy. Participants were offered the fine samples of the Georgian wine produced by “Mukhrani Château”.
