Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Sweden

On 20 April 2009, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Grigol Vashadze paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Sweden.
In the framework of the visit, the Georgian Foreign Minister held meetings with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden Carl Bildt, Speaker of the Riksdag Per Westerberg, Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson and Minister for Trade Ewa Björling.

At the meeting the sides discussed the basic directions of development of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the Kingdom of Sweden and Georgia.

During the meetings, the Swedish side reaffirmed its full support for Georgia's territorial integrity and integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures.

The agenda included main priorities of cooperation between the EU and Georgia and ways of enhancing these relations, particularly in the light of the forthcoming Swedish Presidency of the EU.

The sides focused on possibilities of sharing support, assistance and experience by Sweden regarding such important directions as conclusion and implementation of the EU-Georgia visa facilitation and readmission agreements; launching negotiations with a view to concluding agreement on comprehensive free trade; prospects of concluding agreement on associating and cooperation within East Partnership Programme.

Taking into consideration the existing bilateral relations, the sides made a special emphasis on development of trade and economic relations. Particular emphasis was laid on importance of activity of Swedish companies from the point of increase of investments to Georgia. It was also noted that the Swedish side will proceed with favouring the development of Georgia's economy through carrying out certain programmes.

At the meeting with the Swedish Foreign Minister the sides discussed the current situation in Georgia and underlined the role of international organizations in the process of strengthening security and stability in Georgia. After the meeting the two Foreign Ministers held a joint press-conference.

In the framework of the visit, at the Institute of Security and Development Policy Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze delivered a lecture on challenges and priorities of Georgian foreign policy in the period after the Georgian-Russian war. Besides the students of the Institute, the lecture was also attended by representatives of Sweden's academic circles and diplomatic corps accredited in Stockholm.
