First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia met with the EU Troika

On July 18, 2009 Mr. Giorgi Bokeria, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia met with the EU Troika, which is visiting Georgia on July 16-19, 2009. The EU delegation, headed by H.E. Mr. Carl Bildt, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kingdom of Sweden, the current EU Presidency, included Mr. Santiago Chamorro, Ambassador at Large of Spain, the next EU Presidency; Mr. Peter Semneby, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus; Mr. Karel Kovanda, Deputy Director General of the External Relations of the European Commission, as well as other representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden; Council of the European Union and the European Commission.

During the meeting the sides focused on priority areas serving to the further deepening of EU-Georgia cooperation and security matters, including issues such as conclusion of visa facilitation and readmission agreements; possible establishment of a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area; possible conclusion of an Association Agreement; Eastern Partnership, etc. Significant part of the discussion focused on the situation evolving after August 2008 Russia-Georgia war and, in this context, assessment of the EUMM's role. Particularly, the sides discussed issues related to the extension and enhancement of the mandate of the Mission. The Georgian side underlined the importance of strengthening the EUMM with a police component. In the framework of its visit to Georgia, the EU Troika met with H.E. Mr. Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia; H.E. Mr. Davit Bakradze, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia; Mr. Giorgi Baramidze, Vice Prime-Minister, State Minister of Georgia for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Mr. Temur Iakobashvili, State Minister of Georgia for Reintegration issues.

The EU Troika held a meeting with the representatives of the parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition. The EU delegation had a field visit to the EUMM locations; it also visited an IDP collective centre and IDP settlement in Tserovani.

After its trip to Georgia, the EU Troika will visit the Republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
