Information on the visit of the Swedish Foreign Minister to Georgia

On the 12th and 13th of December 2012, the Swedish Foreign Minister, Mr Carl Bildt, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Mr Nickolai Mladenov, and the Head of the Polish Presidential Chancery, Mr Jacek Michałowski, paid an official visit to Georgia.

On the first day of their visit a meeting was held between them and the Georgian Foreign Minister, Ms Maia Panjikidze. Discussions focused upon ongoing political processes in Georgia, issues concerning bilateral and multilateral co-operation and prospects for further development, Georgia's co-operation with European and Euro-Atlantic structures, the progress Georgia has so far made in this direction and future plans. Special mention was made of the importance of the need to deepen economic relations, and talking points also included topical issues of international importance, Georgian-Russian relations and the situation in Georgia's occupied territories. Special attention was also paid to the importance of the need to pursue democratic reforms and of that for stable development.

The Swedish and Bulgarian Foreign Ministers and the Head of the Polish Presidential Chancery reaffirmed their governments' full support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a joint press conference was held at the Ministry after the meeting.

During their visit to Georgia, Mr Bildt, Mr Mladenov and Mr Michałowski also held meetings with the President of Georgia, Mr Mikheil Saakashvili; with the Prime Minister, Mr Bidzina Ivanishvili; with the Chairman of Georgia's Parliament, Mr Davit Usupashvili; the Defence Minister, Mr Irakli Alasania; the State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Issues, Mr Alexandre Petriashvili; the State Minister for Reintegration Issues, Mr Paata Zakareishvili; the Georgian Orthodox Patriarch, Ilia II; and with representatives of parliamentary minority and majority groups.
