Press-conference devoted to the one year anniversary of the Russia–Georgia war of August 2008

On 12th of August 2009 the Embassy of Georgia to Sweden convened a special press-conference aiming at marking one year anniversary of the Russia–Georgia war of August 2008. The press-conference was attended by media, Swedish friends and Georgian Diaspora representatives. Ambassador Amiran Kavadze made a presentation to the audience; he reminded chronology of events, Russia’s a pre-planed and full scale military aggression against Georgia, the August war consequences and dynamics of continuous provocative actions curried out by Russian military forces and proxy regimes of Abkhazia and South Ossetia during the last year. The head of the Georgian diplomatic mission once again reiterated that in breach of August 12, 2008 six point cease fire agreement, brokered by the EU, 20 percent of Georgia’s territory remains occupied, while around 10000 Russian military servicemen are stationed on occupied territories of Georgia; besides building up of several military bases and their infrastructure are under way. As a result of Russia’s brutal war more than 30000 people are yet unable to return to the places of their permanent residence. Russian occupation troops continue to oppress the remaining tiny Georgian population on the occupied territories. Documents reflected the Russia-Georgia war, chronology of events prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia was disseminated among participants.
