The Georgian Foreign Minister has met his Swedish colleague

On 8 February 2016, Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström paid a working visit to Georgia. At the meeting with Mikheil Janelidze, talking points included priority issues concerning bilateral relations, prospects for further enhancement of co-operation between the two countries, process of Georgia's European integration, current situation in the occupied territories, ongoing processes in the region and   the regional and global issues on the international agenda.The Foreign Minister positively assessed the existing close partner relations between Georgia and Sweden in the political, trade and economic, cultural, educational and other spheres; underlined the need to make maximum use of economic co-operation potential, which means the Swedish business communities' increased interest in Georgia and greater volume of Swedish investments in the country. In this context, Mikheil Janelidze thanked the Government of Sweden for the assistance rendered in the frames of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA)​. Discussions also focused on Sweden's new strategy for Georgia in 2014-2020 that provides for enhanced economic integration with the EU and strengthened democracy. Margot Wallström reaffirmed that Sweden will continue to support Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and as a co-author of the Eastern Partnership will actively promote the realisation of Georgia's European aspirations. After the meeting, a joint press conference was held. In the frames of the visit, Margot Wallström will meet President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Speaker of the Parliament David Usupashvili, representatives of the opposition and civil society. The Swedish Foreign Minister paid tribute to the memory of those who died for the unity of Georgia and laid a wreath at the Fallen Heroes Memorial.
