Swedish scientists have decided to study the role of St George in Georgian history and culture

Professor Jan Svanberg - the author of the book Saint George and the Dragon and his assistant Mr. Gerd Magnusson are due to visit Georgia to study myths and legends surrounding Georgia's main patron - St George. The Swedish explorers are trying to find out how and why an early Christian martyr, who died an around the third century AD, became a Georgian icon. The embassy has elaborated a programme of the visit, which includes meetings with Georgian leading historians, Patriarchate of the Georgian Apostolic Orthodox Church, the Georgian national museum and visits of many churches and cathedrals in Kakheti and Kartli regions of Georgia. The expedition is sponsored by the Swedish St George Guild, which envisages publication of the book on the role of St George in Georgian history and culture.
