The Chairman of the Georgian Parliament of Georgia paid an official visit to Sweden

On 5-7 May, 2010 Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Mr. David Bakradze paid an official visit to Stockholm. He held meetings with the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, Chairman of the Swedish Parliament Mr. Per Westerberg, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Mr. Göran Lennmarker, Chairperson of the Committee on European Union Affairs Ms. Anna Kinberg Batra and Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Carl Bildt.

During audience with the King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed interest towards the social-economic situation and rehabilitation of historic monuments in Georgia, the environmental and energy transportation issues.

On the same day Mr. David Bakradze held a meeting with his colleague, Chairman of the Parliament of Sweden Mr. Per Westerberg. The parties discussed the political-economic situation in Georgia. Mr. David Bakradze emphasized the fact that after the August War of 2008 economic crisis is overcome and the economic indicators of the country have improved. The discussion concerned the issues of security and it was noted that Sweden continues non-recognition policy of the occupied territories and supports territorial integrity of Georgia. Both speakers touched upon the ongoing democratic reforms in Georgia, situation with media freedom and gender equality issues.

At the meeting with Goran Lennmarker and Anna Kinberg Batra the importance of the Eastern Partnership Initiative was emphasized in the course of deeper integration of Georgia with the EU. Mr. David Bakradze expressed gratitude for the support of the Swedish delegation to the PACE and Monitoring Committee of the CoE. During the meetings with the Parliamentary Committees the Swedish Parliamentarians were briefed on political and economic situation in Georgia. The Georgian side was informed on sending 7 Swedish monitors to Georgia to observe the upcoming local elections on May 30.

At the meeting with Göran Lennmarker and Anna Kinberg Batra the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia underlined the importance of the timely conclusion of the EU-Georgia Visa Facilitation Agreement and the commencement of negotiations on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement.

The main topic of the têt à têt meeting of Mr. David Bakradze and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden Mr. Carl Bildt was the situation in the occupied territories of Georgia. David Bakradze and Carl Bildt discussed the security related issues in the wider region, the forthcoming local elections and ongoing democratic reforms in Georgia.

In the framework of the official visit to Stockholm, Mr. David Bakradze addressed the audience at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs with the theme: "Enhanced Democracy: A Sustainable  Solution for External and Internal Challenges", where he discussed the current political situation in Georgia, economic development and foreign policy priorities of the country.
